The Tyne Tunnel will stop taking cash payments from November 2021 as operator TT2 is removing the toll plazas and introducing “open road tolling”.
The move, named the ‘Tyne Pass project’, will mean motorists will no longer have to stop at toll booths at the A19 tunnels, which TT2 says will “speed up your travel time and reduce congestion”, and cut pollution.
Instead, Tyne Tunnel users will drive straight through and pay the toll using pre-paid accounts, an online pay later system, or through PayPoint tills at retailers. TT2 has decided against installing contactless payment card machines, as it says that would slow traffic down and not allow it to remove the toll plazas.
